NYC startups raised at least $837.9M across 34 deals in August 2026, according to data from the AlleyWatch NYC Funding Index. August was the lightest deal month of 2026, with both capital and deal count pulling back from July’s already-moderated pace. The 54% month-over-month decline in capital follows the seasonal pattern that consistently softens NYC funding activity as investors and founders work around compressed summer calendars. Year over year, capital was down 30% and deals fell 44% from August 2025’s $1.19B across 61 rounds — though average deal size climbed 26% to $24.6M, a signal that the companies that did close in August were larger and better capitalized than their counterparts a year ago. The summer may thin the deal flow, but it does not diminish the quality of what gets done.

August 2026: The Month in Detail
August delivered the lightest deal count of 2026, but the numbers require context. This was not August 2025 — that month saw 61 deals close at an average of $19.5M. August 2026 produced 34 deals at a $24.6M average, a 26% higher bar per transaction on 44% fewer transactions. Fewer deals at higher average sizes has become the defining feature of this funding cycle, and August reinforced it.
Cityblock Health’s $116M Series E was the month’s largest transaction, extending the Brooklyn-based healthcare provider’s mission to deliver value-based care to underserved communities. The company has now raised more than $1B in total equity, and the Series E — backed by General Catalyst — signals continued institutional conviction in a model built around preventive care for the patients traditional healthcare has consistently underserved.
Blank Street closed $75M in a Series C backed by Tiger Global, Left Lane Capital, General Atlantic, and General Catalyst, fueling the coffee chain’s continued expansion across urban markets. The depth of that institutional backing — four major growth-stage investors in a single consumer round during the slowest month of the year — is itself a signal: the Blank Street brand has moved beyond early adopter proof points into the kind of conviction that doesn’t wait for a better calendar window. RQD Clearing followed with $74M, backed by Bain Capital Tech Opportunities, ABN AMRO Clearing Bank, and Nyca Partners, for its cloud-native correspondent clearing platform — one of the more structurally important fintech infrastructure plays of the summer.
K Health ($58.9M) and Ultra ($57.1M) rounded out the top five, both closing without disclosed lead investors at time of publication. K Health’s AI-driven primary care platform has built one of the largest clinical datasets in digital health; Ultra’s warehouse robotics deployment model targeting e-commerce packaging has accumulated a roster of institutional backers including Y Combinator and NextView Ventures. The two rounds together point to where late-stage conviction is concentrating in New York: AI-native healthcare platforms and physical AI applied to high-volume logistics.
The Series B category produced three rounds totaling $100M. Flagler Health’s $50M raise — led by Bessemer Venture Partners and joined by SignalFire, Alumni Ventures, Streamlined Ventures, 186 Ventures, PROOF, Tribeca Venture Partners, and Offscript — was the standout, backing the company’s AI-native platform for musculoskeletal clinical and administrative workflow coordination. Ambrook ($30M, Thomson Reuters Ventures and Thrive Capital) and Easy Aerial ($20M, Insight Partners and Entree Capital) rounded out the category.
Series A produced five deals and $51.6M. Aligned Marketplace raised $20M backed by Venrock, connecting self-insured employers to independent specialty care providers. Status ($10.4M), Koxa ($8.7M), PineGap ($8M, Stellaris Venture Partners and Silicon Valley Quad), and Eulerity ($4.5M) made up the remainder.
The early-stage cohort led all categories in deal count with 15 transactions and $92.3M. June.ai’s $20M Pre-Seed — an unusually large early raise for a communication platform positioning as an email replacement, backed by A*, SV Angel, and Vesey Ventures — was the standout. Advocate Technologies ($18M Seed, MetaProp, Brewer Lane Ventures, and Vestigo Ventures) and Malachyte ($10M Seed, Bessemer Venture Partners) followed, with Riven Systems ($7.9M Pre-Seed) applying autonomous labs to mineral processing and Multiplier ($6M Seed, Lux Capital and Y Combinator) deploying AI agents for institutional investors. Claryx ($3.5M Pre-Seed) rounded out the early-stage group, building genomic outbreak detection infrastructure for hospitals, while WashWise ($1.2M Pre-Seed, FJ Labs and Singh Capital) closed its round to build out its garment care platform.

NYC vs. US Funding by Stage — August 2026
| Stage | NYC Deals | NYC Capital | US Deals | US Capital | NYC Cap Share | NYC Deal Share |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Late-Stage | 11 | $597.6M | 57 | $9.81B | 6.1% | 19.3% |
| Series B | 3 | $100.0M | 48 | $3.76B | 2.7% | 6.2% |
| Series A | 5 | $51.6M | 93 | $3.63B | 1.4% | 5.4% |

| Total | 34 | $837.9M | 333 | $18.1B | 4.6% | 10.2% |
NYC’s strongest relative position is in Early-Stage, where the city accounts for 10.2% of national capital on 11.1% of deals — roughly at parity with its overall ecosystem weight. Late-Stage tells a different story: NYC captured 19.3% of US late-stage deal count but only 6.1% of capital, a gap driven by the month’s national megadeals in defense technology, clean energy, and semiconductor infrastructure — categories concentrated outside New York. Series A was the weakest category by capital share at 1.4%, distorted by River AI’s $1.1B raise, which alone represented nearly a third of all US Series A capital in August.

Looking Ahead: NYC Startup Funding Q3 2026
With $19.09B raised through the first eight months of 2026, NYC has already surpassed the full-year 2025 total of $19.01B with four months remaining. August’s summer compression was entirely expected; what matters more is the trajectory it leaves heading into September. Historically, post-Labor Day deal activity rebounds sharply as investors return from summer and the pipelines built up through July and August move to close. The 2026 YTD capital figure and the 26% expansion in average deal size compared to a year ago both suggest the ecosystem’s underlying momentum is intact.
The August data reinforces two structural shifts that have defined 2026. First, the compression dynamic: deal count is declining while round sizes are growing, reflecting a market that is becoming more selective at every stage. Second, the pervasiveness of AI: at least 17 of the 34 rounds closed in August involved companies with AI at the product core, spanning healthcare diagnostics, warehouse robotics, agent infrastructure, cybersecurity, and financial services. That breadth, sustained through the slowest deal month of the year, suggests AI has moved from a differentiation strategy to a baseline expectation across the NYC ecosystem.
NYC’s 4.8% share of US venture capital in August was compressed by the national market’s concentration of megadeals in defense technology, clean energy, and AI infrastructure — categories where West Coast and Texas-based companies drew the largest checks. NYC’s 10.2% share of deal count, however, was more representative of the city’s structural weight in the ecosystem. As September opens, the city enters the final stretch of what is shaping up to be a landmark year.
