An impressive week in Gotham with nearly $300M in funding and a 9 figure acquisition…

With so much going on in the city’s thriving ecosystem, it is easy to miss some of the happenings in the space.  We keep you abreast of a few of things that you may have missed in NYC Tech this week including the fundings, exits, and events.  At the end, we have also listed some of the upcoming events this week that you need to be aware of.

NYC Tech Week in Review.003

HelloFresh, which delivers a weekly box filled with recipes and all of the ingredients one needs to prepare the dishes – no subscription required – has just secured $126 million in Series E funding, led by Rocket Internet and Insight Venture Partners.

HelloFresh currently ships over one million meals per month across the US and Europe.

HourlyNerd, an online marketplace for top MBA students looking for freelance consulting work to connect with businesses in need of their services, has raised $7.8 million in Series B funding, led by return investor Highland Capital Partners, with participation from Greylock Partners, GE Ventures, Haystack, the Kraft family, and Intuit founder Scott Cook.

Sunrise, a suite of free calendar apps and products for mobile and desktop users that connects with and consolidates calendars from different providers, has been acquired by Microsoft for $100 million. The company’s previous investors included NextView Ventures, Balderton Capital, Resolute.vc, Lerer Hippeau Ventures, SV Angel, and many others.

Dering Hall, an online home-design marketplace for interior designers, architects, landscape artists and to showcase their work and sell new, high-end home furnishings and accessories, has raised $2.5 million in Series A funding from previous backers Hearst Magazines, Lerer Hippeau Ventures, and SoftBank Capital.

Healthcare-dedicated investment firm OrbiMed Advisors has raised $924 million for a fund devoted to health-care royalty and credit investments, up from the $600 million the firm raised for its first royalties vehicle in 2011.

Tracx, a cloud-based, enterprise level social media management system providing business analytics solutions through the social web, has closed an $18 million Series C round, led by Edison Partners. Existing investors Flybridge Capital, Mousse Partners, Klingenstein, and Fields & Co also participated in the round.

Derby Games, a legal, real money online gambling platform that makes it easy for players from around the country to place bets and win, has raised $6.5 million in Series A funding led by Bullpen Capital, with participation from angel investors Martin Lautman (a partner at Muskateer Capital), and Bill Pescatello, (a partner at LightBank). Previous backers also participated in the round, including Andlinger & Company and Alexis Ohanian.

Swyft Media, a digital marketing company that helps advertisers, brands and developers reach, engage and monetize more than two billion mobile users in a very unique way, has been acquired by Monotype, a publicly traded company specializing in typesetting and typeface design.

Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed.

Swyft had raised $1 million in seed funding from undisclosed investors.

Quip, who address oral health through beautiful, simple, and affordable products, launched just this week – and raised $300K in angel funding from Magnetik, Ben and Sam Zises and Kal Vepuri.

Think of them as Harry’s Razors for dental hygiene, complete with the NYU College of Dentistry seal of approval.

Taboola raises moola, bigtime! The leading content recommendation platform has raised $117 million in Series E funding led by Fidelity Investments. Other participants in the round include previous backers Marker Financial Advisors and Steadfast Capital and a new group of strategic investors, including Advance Publications, Comcast Ventures, Groupe Arnault, the controlling shareholder of French luxury-goods company LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton; and Yahoo Japan.

Taking a look forward, here are a few events that are coming up this week that should prove to be excellent:

On Tuesday night, our friends at Dumbo Startup Lab host a fireside chat with serial entrepreneur Andrew Weinrech. Andrew is a 7 time founder and sold two companies in a single year – Startup Financing: Fireside Chat with Andrew Weinreich at Dumbo Startup Lab.

Also on Tuesday, New York Code + Design Academy hosts Joy Marcus as a part of their ongoing Women in Tech Series in the Financial District.

On Thursday night, our friends at New Jersey Tech Meetup host Robert Levitan, who has launched 5 different startups and exited 4. 4 – NJ Tech Meetup 57 w/ Robert Levitan, cofounder iVillage, Flooz, Live in Hoboken.

Think you need a technical cofounder? Think again… On Thursday night, our friends at Pivotal Labs host a panel of VCs including Fran Hauser, Steve Schlafman, and Kate Shillo on dispelling myths in the industry – VC Panel: Myth of the Technical Cofounder in Chelsea.
