Chest imaging can play an integral role in spotting early cases of COVID-19 and determining a treatment plan for patients. Brooklyn-based Within Health is joining the fight against COVID-19 with a focus on radiology. Within Health’s telehealth platform allows individuals to connect with licensed physicians, who can quickly determine if the patient needs a preventative radiology screening and which screening he or she may need. After this initial digital consultation, the patient then schedules a convenient location to receive the exam and the results are delivered digitally to Within Health’s secure, patient profile.
AlleyWatch sat down with Cofounder and Chief Product Officer Craig Calderone to learn more about the inspiration for Within Health, how the company is helping physicians diagnose COVID-19 by making imaging accessible, and the company’s expansion plans.
Tell us about the product or service that Within Health offers.
Within Health is a telemedicine platform specifically built around radiology. Our platform helps patients connect with a network of licensed physicians, select the appropriate radiology scan for them, schedule the exam at a convenient location, and digitally centralize the results. Within Health creates insights from scan results through integrated patient/provider communication, and in turn, supports clinical decision making and care coordination. Through direct radiology system integrations, we are able to increase access to medical imaging and surface key risks and recommendations enabling patients to establish self-benchmark comparisons and ultimately leading to better patient outcomes.
How is Within Health different?
Our differentiation is centered around a data-centric user experience.
We’re building an end-to-end user experience for patients and providers powered by key data integrations. Our patients can seamlessly connect with doctors via telehealth, schedule the exam at a convenient location, and access their results in a secure digital vault.
Centralizing a patient medical imaging data repository from key radiology partners enables us to make the patient journey more data-driven.
What market does Within Health target and how big is it?
Within Health targets a Direct-to-Consumer market and select customer segments on the Business to Business. On the B2B side, we create value for organizations with high radiology costs, such as accountable care organizations (ACOs), as well as self-insured employers. Our direct to consumer model gives patients direct access to preventive radiology screens (things like mammograms, heart and lung CT scans, or full-body MRIs) at a fraction of the time and cost.
Who do you consider to be your primary competitors?
Our competitors are direct to consumer radiology scheduling solutions such as Medmo and Radiology Assist, as well as integrated radiology workflow solutions such as PracticeFusion.
What is the business model?
On the B2B side, we charge a SaaS platform fee per patient per month based on the size of the organization. On the D2C side, we offer direct out of pocket rates through an e-commerce per scan model.
What inspired the start of Within Health?
All of the Within Health founders have personally experienced the painful radiology experience throughout our lives. However, we were looking into data problems encountered in Alzheimer’s research and realized there was a key need in sourcing medical imaging data. Healthy brain scan data is crucial for detecting early signs of Alzheimer’s / Dementia; however, the infrastructure is extremely difficult for key research to happen. During our customer interviews with patients, physicians, hospitals, and radiology centers we realized the barriers to access medical imaging data and the deep need for an integrated data-centric experience.
What are the milestones that you plan to achieve within six months?
Our Key milestones of the next six months center around user growth on the B2B and D2C side as well as geographical expansion.
User growth – Reach 2000 patient lives – helping to streamline patient journeys and reduce costs for our healthcare system
User growth – Roll out our platform to large healthcare organizations like ACOs and employers
Expansion – Expand our reach to 3 additional states and regions

Building a startup is an emotional rollercoaster that has highs and lows but as long as you enjoy the ride it’s all worth it, (whiskey helps).
If you could be put in touch with anyone in the New York community who would it be and why?
Fred Wilson at Union Square Ventures. We see Fred as a central place to enabling NYC tech to flourish and as we seek to build within the community, we want to have a partner that can help us navigate the relationships needed to thrive and manage the ups and downs of building a startup in a global pandemic environment.
Why did you launch in New York?
We launched in New York for a few reasons. First, it’s our home. Additionally, we see a number of our customers and early adopters in the region. There’s a high concentration of radiology providers owned by regional and national radiology groups, as well as the high concentration of target customer segments on both the D2C side and B2B side.
What’s your favorite restaurant in the city?
