Correctly selecting and assigning the right resources is critical to any workload and application when it comes to cloud optimization. But after you’ve selected the best-fit infrastructure, fine-tuning these resources can yield significant improvements in efficiency and cost. Concertio specializes in AI-powered, optimization tools that boost the performance of businesses critical computing services, allowing servers to run at higher efficiency and reducing infrastructure costs. This all done in real-time and behind the scenes.
AlleyWatch sat down with Cofounder and CEO Dr. Tomer Morad to learn more about Concertio’s product offering, the importance of server performance optimization, and the company’s recent funding round.
Who were your investors and how much did you raise?
Concertio raised $4.2M Seed led by Differential Ventures with participation from Empire State Development, NextLeap Ventures, and others.
Tell us about the product or service that Concertio offers.
We help our customers boost the performance of their critical computing services while slashing their infrastructure costs. We do this using our patented AI-powered Optimizer products, which tailor the many system settings that are present in the processors, firmware, operating systems, middleware, applications and even compiler flags to the needs of the currently running applications. Servers that run with optimal settings can achieve significantly higher performance than by using the default settings, and in large deployments, this translates into higher efficiency and reduced infrastructure costs.
What inspired you to start Concertio?
The inspiration to start Concertio came from my Ph.D. research on computer architecture while testing out new ideas. When evaluating a new idea, for example a new OS scheduler, you’d want to compare it with a tuned baseline system to see if it has merit. At the time, there weren’t any tools that helped you do this automatically. This sparked the question: what if servers would be able to tune themselves, without any human intervention? In a world with tens of millions of servers, such a technology would have a very big impact.
After finishing my Ph.D., I joined the Runway program at the Jacobs Technion-Cornell Institute of Cornell Tech in NYC to start Concertio together with my cofounders Andrey Gelman and Tomer Paz.
How is Concertio different?
We take a unique and automated approach to address the parameter tuning challenge enterprises face today, from the development stage all the way to production. In the past, there were only a handful of system settings, allowing performance engineers to manually test and find the best configurations. Today’s systems employ hundreds of different settings, way too many for human operators to optimize. This is where we come in: our software leverages machine learning techniques to automatically explore and apply the best configurations. Due to the complexity involved and lack of available tools, most systems today are not optimized for their workloads, and we’re aiming to change that.
We support three techniques for optimization: dynamic, continuous and static optimization techniques. Our dynamic optimization product, Optimizer Runtime, equips systems with the ability to automatically self-tune in real-time. IT professionals and DevOps engineers can achieve significant speedups and cost reductions in production environments within minutes of installation, without having to configure the tool.
Our static optimization product, Optimizer Studio, provides recommendations for system settings based on experimentation and can be integrated into the CI/CD pipelines for continuous optimization by DevOps engineers, or be utilized by hardcore performance engineers and IT professionals for static optimization.
