Imagine having the tools to completely secure your home in less than 15 seconds. Well, that’s now a reality with Kangaroo, the contract-free and entirely customizable security system. This security system has dynamic and transparent pricing to ensure that homeowners get the most out of this system. This product seamlessly connects to your home WiFi network, and if you download its smartphone app homeowners – and even neighbors— can receive alerts if a suspicious motion is detected.
AlleyWatch spoke with Kangaroo CEO and cofounder Maximus Yaney about launching a home security platform in NYC.
Tell us about the product or service that Kangaroo offers.
Kangaroo is security for all. Our products and plans are radically affordable, super simple to setup and use, contract-free and mix-and-matchable for an entirely customized security system.
How is Kangaroo different?
We are fundamentally different from any other security brand thanks to our hubless architecture, low cost, contract-free plans, and app-first design.
What market does Kangaroo target and how big is it?
Quite simply the homes, people, and places that once thought security was out of reach. This is estimated to be between 80-84% of US homes – even more globally.
What is the Kangaroo business model?
By removing the unnecessary parts of the security system, such as the hub, we are able to offer our products and plans at an extremely competitive price point. Our ambitions are global – we believe we can have a security system in every household that was previously unprotected.
What inspired the start of Kangaroo?
We each had a personal connection to the idea. I was motivated by my mother’s predatory experience with Big Security, and a desire to create a solution that would be easy and affordable for her to use.
How do you plan on competing with other companies that are in the space that already established and more capitalized?
By giving power back to the people. How much do they want to protect? How much can they afford? We’re giving them the tools to protect themselves.
What are the milestones that you plan to achieve within six months?
In our first six months, we had hardware in the hands of our first consumer, from conception to working device. In the next six months, we hope to have 100,000 subscribers.
What is the one piece of startup advice that you never got?
“Get a mentor.”
If you could be put in touch with anyone in the New York community who would it be and why?
The Mayor. We believe firmly that we can reduce crime at the hyper-local level and would love to collaborate with community leadership at all scales.
Why did you launch in New York?
Our team is mostly based in New York, with offices in Shenzhen and Poland, as well. Several of us have worked together in the past, and we were all excited to get back together to build this company. New York is so full of creative, ambitious people, which makes it a great place to recruit new talent.
What’s your favorite restaurant in the city?
Joe’s Shanghai.
