Today we take a look at the state of venture capital and angel funding for January 2014, both in New York and nationally. Analyzing some publicly available data from our friends at CrunchBase, we break down the national aggregate statistics for all funding deals by stage of funding (Angel, Series A, Series B, and Series C+).

Key Takeaways:

There was a big uptick in the average angel round nationwide from 2013 averages, however in New York things remained relatively steady. We’ll monitor this as the year progresses.

NYC accounted for 14% of total deals which is on par with 2013 historical averages.

The average series A round in NYC was up a 76% in January from 2013 averages. While the Oscar Health round ($30M) did impact this, there were other Series A fundings at the $10M+ level including Mashable, Oyster, Zachary Prell, and One Hour Translation. NYC’s contribution to the number of deals remained in line with historical averages.
